Direct from France to us, this very large (46” ht.) antique wood wall sculpture, after Jean Francois Millet, inspired by his oil painting, “The Angelus”.
Note: Jean-François Millet (1814-1897) was a French artist noted for his oil paintings of pheasant farmers and landscapes, and a source of inspiration for Vincent van Gogh!!!
This piece is a stunning work of art, hand carved from a single piece of wood, with meticulous detail, and true to the design of the original oil painting. This sculpture re-creates one of Millet’s well-known paintings, a commissioned piece called “The Angelus”, that was completed in 1857. Carvings feature a couple standing in their potato field, praying over the crops. Note the period dress, the harvest tools and baskets, with a steepled church in the background, and dimensional rocks/cobblestone, with foliage on the wide, lower portion.
Measurements: 46” ht. x 19” x 5”.
This carving is one of two that we recently acquired, sourced in France. The other is a rendition of “The Gleaners”, another well-known painting by the same artist, Jean Francois Millet!
Note: All of our antiques are direct from Europe.
