Antique French Carved Wood Wall Sculpture The Gleaners by Jean Francois Millet

Antique French carved wall sculpture of The Gleaners by Jean Francois Millet.

Direct from France to us, this very large (45” ht.) antique wood wall sculpture, after Jean Francois Millet, inspired by his oil painting, “The Gleaners”.
Note: Jean-François Millet (1814-1897) was a French artist noted for his oil paintings of pheasant farmers and landscapes, and a source of inspiration for Vincent van Gogh!!

This piece is a stunning work of art, hand carved from a single piece of wood, with meticulous detail, and true to the design of the original oil painting. This sculpture re-creates one of Millet’s most well-known paintings, “The Gleaners”, that was completed in 1857. Carvings here feature women removing bits of grain left in the fields following harvest, as the stories told in the Old Testament. The upper carvings reflect farm buildings and stacks of grain; the wide, lower portion include several carved lizards on cobblestones and foliage.

Measurements: 45” ht. x 18.5” x 5”.

This carving is one of two that we recently acquired, sourced in France. The other is a rendition of “The Angelus”, another well-known painting by the same artist, Jean Francois Millet!

Carvings feature a couple standing in their potato field, praying over the crops. 20th Century French Wooden Wall Decoration

Intricate and intriguing, this vintage wooden wall decoration is carved to depict a scene of cherubs in a bacchanal. Made in France in 1913, the decadence and detail of the scene contrasts with the simple, rustic finish of the wood. The cherubs are seated on billowing clouds: one holds panpipes and a vine of hanging grapes, while another convivially embraces his companions, cup in hand. The detail of the tendrils of the vines and the flowing hair of the debauched babies is evidence of the artist’s skill: their signature and the date are carved in graceful cursive along the bottom edge.
